Intro

Gondwana delivers a sound that feels like a warm embrace from the South Pacific. Their music is rooted in the classic one-drop and rockers rhythms of 1970s Jamaica, but it is filtered through a distinctly Latin American lens. The result is a lush, melodic version of reggae where the basslines are thick and round, the horns are bright and celebratory, and the vocals possess a romantic, soulful quality that feels both intimate and universal.

What sets them apart is their ability to balance spiritual Rastafarian themes with accessible, pop-leaning melodies. While many roots bands lean into grit, Gondwana opts for a polished, hifi production style that emphasizes the clarity of their musicianship. The interplay between the 'bubble' organ and the syncopated guitar scratches creates a hypnotic, liquid movement that defines their most iconic tracks.

Start with their self-titled 1997 debut or the 2000 album 'Alabanza' to hear the band at their creative peak. These records capture the essential transition of Chilean reggae from a niche underground scene to a massive continental movement, led by some of the most infectious hooks in the Spanish-language reggae canon.

Gondwana is a reggae group from La Pincoya, Santiago, Chile, founded in 1987 by I-Locks Labbé. They have been produced by Dr. Dread of RAS Records. With their charismatic leader Quique Neira, they found success in Chile and abroad, as the band played shows in Jamaica and the United States, cradles of reggae.
