Giant Drag

Breathy, deadpan vocals floating over fuzzy grunge riffs. Sarcastic indie rock that feels like a late-night conversation in a dive bar parking lot.

Intro

Giant Drag sounds like the hazy, cigarette-smoke-filled intersection of 90s grunge and 2000s indie rock. Annie Hardy’s vocals are famously breathy and detached, often compared to a more cynical Mazzy Star or a less polished Liz Phair. The music is anchored by thick, fuzzy guitar lines and a surprisingly full rhythm section, considering it was largely a two-piece with Micah Calabrese playing drums and synth simultaneously.

What makes them truly distinctive is the jarring contrast between their melodic, almost sweet sonic palette and Hardy's brutal, pitch-black lyrical humor. They possess a 'slacker' energy that feels both effortless and deeply vulnerable, using sarcasm as a shield for genuine emotional weight. The production often favors a warm, analog grit that makes the songs feel like they were recorded in a basement but meant for a stadium.

Start with 'Hearts and Unicorns' to get the full experience of their peak era. It perfectly captures their ability to blend catchy, distorted hooks with song titles that would make your parents blush. It is essential listening for anyone who misses the era when indie rock felt a little more dangerous and a lot more honest.

Giant Drag is an American indie rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 2003 by singer and guitarist Annie Hardy and drummer and keyboardist Micah Calabrese. After releasing their debut EP, Lemona in 2004, the band released their debut studio album, Hearts and Unicorns (2005) through Kickball Records, a subsidiary of Interscope. Interscope dropped the band from their label after issuing their single, "This Isn't It", in 2006, and Calabrese subsequently left the project. Hardy continued to record material for the band, and their second album, Waking Up is Hard to Do, was self-released in 2013 through their own label, Full Psycho Records. In 2020, Hardy revealed she had written and recorded a third album with former Klaxons singer Jamie Reynolds in London.
