Intro

Ghymes creates a sound that feels like a bridge between a medieval court and a modern rock arena. It is rooted deeply in the soil of Central Europe, utilizing traditional instruments like the dulcimer, bagpipe, and koboz, but it breathes with a contemporary, almost aggressive vitality. The music is characterized by tight, sharp rhythms and a sense of 'musical magic' that feels both ancient and immediate.

What truly sets them apart is their refusal to stay within the polite boundaries of traditional folk. By introducing saxophones and a full drum kit, they transform pastoral melodies into something cinematic and urgent. Their vocal arrangements often lean into a choral, communal strength, making every song feel like a shared ritual or a scene from a grand theatrical production.

Start with the album Smaragdváros (Emerald City) to hear them at their most internationally acclaimed peak. It perfectly captures their ability to balance delicate, acoustic storytelling with the massive, rhythmic energy that earned them a spot on the World Music Charts Europe. It is the ideal gateway into their unique 'musical purgatory' where history and modernity collide.

Ghymes is a band consisting of musicians of the Hungarian minority from Slovakia, founded at the University of Education in Nitra in 1984, by musicians with different preliminary musical experiences from classical through rock and Renaissance music. Folk elements have gradually clung together with their own individual musical ideas. In the year of 2000, Ghymes had the opportunity to attend two events: the World Expo 2000 in Hanover (Day of Hungary) and the official celebrations of the New Millennium in Hungary (St, Stephen's day, August 20, 2000). Smaragdváros (Emerald City) was produced by EMI Records and came out in Hungary in November 2000. In March 2001, it was #11 on the World Music Charts Europe. On December 24, 2018, the band performed a Christmas concert, Mennyből az angyal [Angel from heaven], which broadcast on national television (Duna Televizio). The Ghymes band performed together with the Hungarian Radio's children's choir.
