Geographer

Shimmering synth-pop that pairs soaring falsetto with rhythmic cello. It is soulful music for lonely nights and neon-lit drives through the city.

Intro

Geographer sounds like the intersection of a classical conservatory and a late-night electronic club. The music is defined by Mike Deni's incredible falsetto, which floats effortlessly over a bed of analog synthesizers and driving, polyrhythmic beats. There is a distinct 'outer space' quality to the production, yet it remains grounded by the organic, often staccato presence of the cello, creating a sound that is both futuristic and deeply human.

What truly sets Geographer apart is the emotional weight behind the danceable exterior. Born from a period of personal loss, the songs carry a persistent sense of yearning and existential inquiry. The arrangements are dense and meticulously layered, often building from quiet, intimate moments into massive, cathartic crescendos that feel like a physical release of tension.

Start with the 'Animal Shapes' EP for the quintessential Geographer experience. Tracks like 'Kites' and 'Paris' showcase the band's ability to turn grief into something beautiful and kinetic. If you prefer a more polished, expansive sound, 'Myth' offers a deeper dive into the lush, synth-driven world that has made them a staple of the indietronica scene.

Geographer is an American synth-pop/indie rock band founded in 2007 by Mike Deni in San Francisco, California. Deni has described his sound as being "soulful music from outer space"; using analog, electronic and acoustic elements to craft dense layers and unique sound textures. As Geographer, Deni has released multiple albums, including Innocent Ghosts in 2008, Myth in 2012, and Ghost Modern in 2015; along with two EPs, Animal Shapes in 2010, Endless Motion in 2015; and a number of 7-inch singles including, "Kites" in 2010.
