Fuzz

Heavy, blown-out riffs and frantic drumming that channel the darker side of 1970s proto-metal. Raw energy for fans of high-volume psych and basement rock.

Intro

Fuzz sounds like a lost reel from a 1971 recording session that was accidentally left in a humid garage for forty years. It is thick, humid, and dangerously loud, characterized by guitar tones so saturated they feel physical and drumming that sounds like a controlled avalanche. The music is a relentless assault of heavy riffs that owe as much to the bluesy swagger of Blue Cheer as they do to the doom-laden weight of early Black Sabbath.

What sets them apart is the sheer velocity and technical interplay between the three members. While many stoner rock bands settle into a slow, hazy crawl, Fuzz maintains a frantic garage-punk urgency. Ty Segall's drumming is particularly distinctive, favoring busy, rolling fills that keep the songs from ever feeling static. The vocals are often buried slightly in the mix, treated with just enough grit to sound like a transmission from a paranoid mind.

Start with their self-titled debut album. It is the purest distillation of their mission statement: massive riffs, psychedelic freak-outs, and a sense of impending doom that somehow remains incredibly fun to listen to. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who thinks rock music lost its edge when it moved out of the basement.

Fuzz is a rock band from San Francisco formed in 2011. The band consists of Charles Moothart (vocals, guitar), Ty Segall (vocals, drums), and Chad Ubovich (vocals, bass guitar). Created as an outlet for Moothart's affection for hard rock riffs, Fuzz began as collaboration between Moothart and Segall, while Moothart performed in Segall's live band. In 2012, they released two singles, "This Time I Got a Reason" and "Sleigh Ride", and were joined by the bass guitarist Roland Cosio. In October 2013, the band released its first album, Fuzz. While touring the album, Ubovich (Meatbodies and Mikal Cronin Band) replaced Cosio on bass guitar. In October 2015, Fuzz released a second album, entitled II. It was written in a more collaborative manner than the band members had generally experienced before. In October 2020, a third album, entitled III, was released.
