Future Bible Heroes

Wry, synth-driven pop that pairs deadpan vocals with vintage drum machines. It is the sound of a lonely disco where the lyrics are sharper than the beats.

Intro

Imagine a dance club where the glitter is made of frozen tears and the DJ is a cynical poet. Future Bible Heroes offers a specific brand of electronic pop that feels both artificial and deeply human, utilizing cold, 80s-inspired synthesizers to frame Stephin Merritt's trademark lyrical wit and melancholia. It is music that invites you to dance, but only if you are okay with feeling a little bit sad while doing so.

The magic lies in the contrast between Chris Ewen's bright, rhythmic arrangements and the vocalists' detached delivery. Whether it is Merritt's resonant baritone or Claudia Gonson's airy, matter-of-fact tone, the voices never quite 'perform' the emotion; they report it. This creates a fascinating distance that makes the heartbreak feel more relatable and less melodramatic.

Start with 'Memories of Love' for the purest distillation of their sound. It captures that unique intersection of indie-pop sensibility and electronic precision, perfect for listeners who appreciate a clever rhyme as much as a catchy hook.

Future Bible Heroes is an American indie pop group led by Stephin Merritt, best known for his work with The Magnetic Fields. Merritt shares vocal duties with fellow Magnetic Fields member Claudia Gonson, who sings on the entirety of 2002's Eternal Youth. In contrast to much of Merritt's work with other groups, the Future Bible Heroes work largely on electronica-based disco, with music provided by Chris Ewen, formerly of Figures on a Beach. In 1995, the group contributed the song "Hopeless" to the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Bothered, produced by the Red Hot Organization.
