Intro

Frida's solo work is a masterclass in sophisticated Europop that leans into the shadows. While her global fame is tied to the bright harmonies of ABBA, her solo catalog reveals a more complex, often melancholic artist. Her 80s output, particularly under the production of Phil Collins, features that iconic heavy drum sound paired with icy synths and her own remarkably warm, grounded vocal delivery.

What makes her distinctive is the 'dark' side of the disco coin. She possesses a mezzo-soprano range that feels more earthy and dramatic than her contemporaries, allowing her to navigate rock-tinged anthems and delicate Swedish ballads with equal authority. There is a precision to her phrasing that feels theatrical yet deeply intimate, especially in her later, more atmospheric work.

Start with 'I Know There's Something Going On' to hear her at her most powerful and rhythmic. For those seeking something more reflective, her 1996 album 'Djupa andetag' offers a lush, mature take on Swedish pop that proves her voice only grew more resonant with time.

Anni-Frid Synni Lyngstad (born 15 November 1945), also known simply as Frida, is a Swedish singer who is best known as one of the founding members and lead singers of the pop band ABBA. Born in Bjørkåsen (in Ballangen Municipality), Norway, to a Norwegian mother and a German father, she grew up in Torshälla, Sweden. Lyngstad found international fame when she joined ABBA, who have sold over 400 millions records (albums and singles) worldwide, making the group, which included her second husband Benny Andersson, one of the best-selling music acts in history. After the break-up of ABBA, she continued an international solo singing career with mixed success, before retiring from music.
