Forest Fire is a New York City-based experimental rock collective led by Mark Thresher. Emerging in the late 2000s, the band initially gained traction with their debut 'Survival' (2008), which critics characterized as 'urban folk' with an art-punk edge.
Their sound evolved significantly over a trilogy of key releases, moving from the lo-fi, skeletal folk of their debut toward the more expansive, synth-heavy, and rhythmically complex textures of 'Staring at the X' (2011) and 'Screens' (2013). Thresher's baritone delivery often draws comparisons to Bill Callahan or Leonard Cohen, but the band's instrumental backdrop - incorporating vintage synths and jagged guitar lines - places them closer to the art-rock lineage of Pere Ubu or Television. Critically, they are noted for their lyrical depth, tackling themes of mortality and urban isolation. Despite their NYC roots, their signing to the UK-based FatCat Records helped cement their reputation within the international indie-rock and experimental folk scenes.
