FM (often designated FM UK) emerged in 1984 as Britain's premier answer to the American Adult Oriented Rock (AOR) movement led by bands like Journey and Foreigner. Centered around the exceptional vocal talents of Steve Overland, the band carved out a niche for high-fidelity, melodic hard rock that emphasized soulful delivery and sophisticated arrangements.
Their debut album, Indiscreet, remains a cornerstone of the genre, lauded for its pristine production and songwriting consistency. Despite the shift in musical trends during the 1990s, FM maintained a dedicated cult following in Europe and Japan, eventually reforming in the late 2000s to a hero's welcome. Their later work, including Atomic Generation and Heroes and Villains, shows a remarkable preservation of Overland's vocal range and a shift toward a slightly more muscular guitar sound while retaining their signature melodic core. They are critically regarded as one of the most consistent and technically gifted bands in the history of melodic rock, influencing a new wave of 'New Wave of Traditionalist' AOR acts.
