Flook

Flook is a cornerstone of the modern Anglo-Irish traditional scene, though they are frequently categorized as 'flute-heavy' chamber folk due to their unique front-line composition. Formed in 1995, the group moved away from the standard pub-session sound toward a highly arranged, technical style.

Their sound identity is built on the dual-flute attack of Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen, utilizing percussive 'tonguing' and overblowing techniques that give the instruments a rhythmic edge. John Joe Kelly's contribution to the bodhrán cannot be overstated; he is widely considered one of the most influential players of the instrument, utilizing a 'rim-heavy' style that mimics a drum machine's precision. After a hiatus beginning in 2008, their 2019 return with 'Ancora' proved their lasting influence, maintaining a critical consensus as one of the most technically proficient acoustic acts in the world. They bridge the gap between traditional Celtic music and contemporary acoustic jazz through their use of complex time signatures and sophisticated chord voicings.
