Gritty world-punk that feels like a noir film set in a Balkan dive bar. Cynical, brassy, and dangerously rhythmic music for the weary traveler.
Firewater sounds like the house band at a wedding that ended in a fistfight and a sudden flight to Istanbul. It is a collision of New York's jagged post-punk history with the brass-heavy, minor-key melodies of Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The music is anchored by Tod A.'s distinctive baritone and a rhythmic pulse that feels equally indebted to 1950s spy soundtracks and 1990s indie rock.
What truly sets them apart is their 'world punk' philosophy. Rather than merely sampling global sounds, they embed themselves in them, particularly on later albums where the grit of the road is audible in every track. There is a persistent sense of noir-ish cynicism balanced by a dark, carnivalesque humor. It is music for people who find beauty in the frayed edges of society and the chaotic energy of a crowded street market.
Start with 'The Golden Hour' to hear their most successful fusion of travelogue field recordings and rock songwriting. If you prefer the more aggressive, theatrical side of their sound, 'Get Off the Cross... We Need the Wood for the Fire' offers a perfect introduction to their 'cabaret gone wrong' aesthetic.
Firewater is an American band founded by American singer/instrumentalist Tod A. in New York City in 1995, after the breakup of his previous group Cop Shoot Cop. A self-described "world punk" band, Firewater incorporate diverse elements of world music with punk rock rhythms, including cabaret, ska, jazz, folk and most notably Eastern European influences such as klezmer and gypsy music, which has led to their inclusion in the gypsy punk genre. By 2012, Firewater had released seven studio albums and seen some success, particularly in Europe and on United States college radio stations.
