Sharp, angular post-punk with a nervous urban pulse. German art-rock that feels like a cold neon light in a concrete city. Intense, rhythmic, and deeply poetic.
Fehlfarben sounds like the friction between a crowded city and an isolated mind. Their music is built on a foundation of tight, almost funk-influenced basslines and drums that push forward with a restless energy. Over this, the guitars and saxophones cut through like shards of glass, creating a sound that is simultaneously danceable and deeply unsettling. It is the sound of West Germany in the late 70s and early 80s, captured in high-contrast black and white.
What truly sets them apart is the vocal delivery of Peter Hein. His deadpan, almost conversational style avoids the histrionics of traditional rock, instead opting for a cool, intellectual detachment that makes the biting social commentary feel even more urgent. The lyrics are fragmented and poetic, capturing the malaise of urban life and the feeling of being a 'wrong color' in a standardized world. It is music that demands attention but refuses to comfort the listener.
Start with their 1980 masterpiece 'Monarchie und Alltag'. It is widely considered one of the most important German-language albums ever made, perfectly bridging the gap between the raw energy of punk and the sophisticated textures of new wave. From the driving rhythm of 'Paul ist tot' to the iconic 'Ein Jahr (Es geht voran)', it provides the definitive blueprint for the band's enduring influence.
Fehlfarben is a Neue Deutsche Welle music band from Düsseldorf, Germany, that was formed in 1979. Its founding members were Peter Hein (vocals), former member of the German punk band Mittagspause (English translation: "lunch break"), Thomas Schwebel (guitar, former member of Mittagspause, and German punk band S.Y.P.H.), Michael Kemner (bass, former member of 20 Colors, Mau Mau, DAF, YOU), Frank Fenstermacher (saxophone, later a member of Der Plan), Markus Oehlen and Uwe Bauer (drums, former Mittagspause, Materialschlacht).
