Fear

Aggressive, razor-sharp hardcore punk with a mean streak and a dark sense of humor. Fast, tight, and unapologetically loud music for the mosh pit.

Intro

Fear sounds like a brick through a plate-glass window in 1981 Los Angeles. Their music is defined by a relentless, high-velocity assault that somehow maintains a surgical rhythmic precision. Lee Ving's vocals are a masterclass in the punk snarl, delivered with a mix of genuine hostility and a sneering, satirical wit that pokes fun at everything from urban decay to social norms.

What sets them apart from their peers is their technical proficiency. While many of their contemporaries leaned into sloppy chaos, Fear's rhythm section was notoriously tight, occasionally betraying a background in jazz or blues that allowed them to play at breakneck speeds without falling apart. This creates a sound that is both overwhelming and incredibly focused, like a controlled explosion.

Start with 'The Record' from 1982. It is the definitive statement of California hardcore, containing anthems like 'I Love Livin' in the City' and 'Let's Have a War.' It captures the band at their peak: fast, offensive, and technically untouchable.

Fear, stylized as FEAR, is an American punk rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1977. The band is credited for helping to shape the sound and style of Californian hardcore punk. The group gained national prominence after an infamous 1981 performance on Saturday Night Live. Frontman Lee Ving has been the band's only constant member. Since its formation, the band has gone through various lineup changes, and at one point featured Flea, later a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, on bass. The classic Fear lineup existed from 1978 to 1982, and was composed of Ving, guitarist Philo Cramer, bassist Derf Scratch, and drummer Spit Stix. Cramer and Stix later rejoined the band in 2018.
