Fang is a seminal American hardcore punk band formed in Berkeley, California, in 1980. Led by vocalist Sam McBride (Sammytown) and guitarist Tom Flynn, the band became a cornerstone of the 'Boner Records' sound and the broader East Bay scene.
Unlike the high-speed thrash of their peers, Fang pioneered a slower, heavier, and more abrasive style of punk that heavily influenced the development of sludge metal and grunge. Their 1982 EP 'Landshark' is considered a masterpiece of the genre, featuring tracks like 'The Money Will Roll Right In,' which was famously covered by Nirvana and Mudhoney. The band's history is marked by extreme volatility, including McBride's incarceration in the late 1980s, which led to a long hiatus. Since reforming in the late 1990s, they have maintained a prolific output within the independent and 'doujin' (self-published) circuits, particularly in Japan where their legacy of raw, experimental hardcore remains highly influential among underground collectors and noise-rock enthusiasts.
