Fünf Sterne deluxe

Witty, high-energy German hip-hop with a surrealist edge. Heavy on turntable scratch culture and playful Hamburg swagger for late-night parties.

Intro

Fünf Sterne deluxe represents the peak of the Hamburg hip-hop scene's golden era, blending high-level technical skill with a refusal to take the genre's self-seriousness at face value. Their sound is built on a foundation of thick, sample-heavy boom bap beats, but it is frequently interrupted by weird electronic textures, vocoder-processed interjections, and a visual-first design sensibility that makes their music feel like a living comic book.

What sets them apart is the chemistry between Das Bo and Tobi Tobsen, whose flows oscillate between laid-back cool and manic energy. Unlike their more aggressive contemporaries, FSd leaned into the 'deluxe' lifestyle with an ironic, absurdist twist, turning mundane German phrases into iconic hooks. The inclusion of a dedicated visual designer and live sampler operator in their core lineup ensured that their sound was always as much about the 'vibe' and the art as it was about the bars.

Start with their 1998 debut 'Sillium' to hear the blueprint of their sound. It captures the perfect balance of underground credibility and pop accessibility that defined the turn-of-the-millennium German charts. For a more modern, polished take on their signature weirdness, their 2017 comeback album 'Flash' proves they haven't lost their knack for infectious, left-field grooves.

Fünf Sterne deluxe (“Five Stars Deluxe”) is a German-language hip-hop band from Hamburg, Germany, founded in mid-1997, consisting of the rappers Das Bo (Mirko Bogojevic) and Tobi Tobsen (Tobias Schmidt), the graphic designer Marcnesium (Marc Clausen), and the disc jockey DJ Coolmann (Mario Cullmann). The group released two full-length albums (Sillium and Neo.Now) and a number of singles and EPs until the break-up in 2004. DJ Coolmann left the band in 2003 for unknown reasons, while the remaining members continued to perform until late 2004 when the group was formally dissolved. In 2013 the original lineup performed at the “Beats auf der Bahn” festival in Hamburg. Two years later they signed a new record deal with Warner Music Group. The third album called Flash was released on 6 October 2017.
