Estampie

Ancient melodies reimagined through a minimalist lens. Ethereal vocals and hammered dulcimers create a haunting, sacred space for deep focus or quiet reflection.

Intro

Estampie sounds like a bridge between the 12th century and the modern avant-garde. It is music that feels heavy with the weight of history yet light enough to float through the rafters of a cathedral. The sound is anchored by the bright, percussive shimmer of the hammered dulcimer and the rich, velvet alto of Sigrid Hausen, creating an atmosphere that is both scholarly and deeply emotional.

What sets them apart is their restraint. While other medieval-influenced groups lean into bombastic tavern energy or heavy electronic beats, Estampie embraces the silence between notes. They use minimalist repetition and world music textures to make ancient troubadour songs feel like contemporary ambient compositions. It is a sound defined by its reverence for the source material and its willingness to let a single melody breathe for minutes at a time.

Start with 'Fin Amor' to hear their most polished blend of courtly love songs and atmospheric production. If you prefer something more austere and sacred, 'Ave Maris Stella' offers a pure immersion into the group's early, more traditional medieval explorations. It is the perfect soundtrack for anyone who finds beauty in the intersection of the sacred and the spectral.

Estampie (after the medieval dance estampie) is a German music group, founded in 1985 by Sigrid Hausen (aka Syrah), Michael Popp and Ernst Schwindl. The band plays primarily medieval music, with some modern influences from world and minimalist music. The group is not connected to the Leeds-based British ensemble Estampie which recorded Under the Greenwood Tree for Naxos.
