EMF (Epsom Mad Funkers) emerged from the Forest of Dean as a pivotal force in the early 1990s indie-dance movement. While often grouped with 'Madchester' acts like Jesus Jones and The Farm, EMF brought a harder, more sample-heavy edge influenced by hip-hop production and stadium rock.

Their 1990 debut single 'Unbelievable' became a global phenomenon, famously utilizing an Andrew Dice Clay sample to bridge the gap between pop accessibility and alternative grit. Their debut album, Schubert Dip, remains a benchmark for the era's cross-pollination of genres. Critically, they were often viewed as the hedonistic 'bad boys' of the baggy scene, a reputation bolstered by their high-energy live shows and public image. Despite a major hiatus and the tragic loss of bassist Zac Foley in 2002, the band's 2020s revival with Go Go Sapiens demonstrates a lasting commitment to their signature blend of electronic textures and guitar-driven hooks. They occupy a unique space in music history as one of the few UK alternative bands of their era to achieve a Number 1 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100.
