Sultry, sophisticated art-pop with a muscular rock spine. Lush 70s FM radio warmth meets the nervous energy of the modern city. Perfect for late-night introspection.
Elk City sounds like the intersection of a smoky jazz club and a high-fidelity 1970s recording studio. There is a palpable sense of weight and space in their music, where every drum fill and guitar lick feels intentional and lived-in. The sound is anchored by a rich, analog warmth that makes even their most experimental moments feel inviting and grounded.
What truly sets them apart is the interplay between Renee LoBue’s versatile, commanding vocals and Sean Eden’s distinctive guitar work. LoBue moves effortlessly from a hushed, vulnerable whisper to a powerful, soul-inflected belt, while Eden provides a masterclass in melodic restraint and sudden, jagged brilliance. It is music that feels both intellectually rigorous and deeply, uncomfortably honest.
Start with House of Tongues to hear the band at their most polished and expansive. It perfectly captures their ability to blend folk, rock, and soul into a singular, sophisticated pop vision. From there, move to Everybody's Insecure for a more direct, emotionally raw experience that showcases their enduring relevance in the indie-rock landscape.
Elk City is an American art-pop band from New York and New Jersey formed in 1997 as a spin-off of Melting Hopefuls. The original lineup consisted of Renee LoBue, Ray Ketchem and Peter Langland-Hassan. The band released two albums, Status and Hold Tight the Ropes, in 2000 and 2002, respectively. After the second album, Langland-Hassan left the band, which led to the inclusion of Sean Eden and Barbara Endes. They released New Believers in 2007 under the new lineup, and it was followed by House of Tongues in 2010. In 2018 Elk City signed with Bar/None Records and released "Everybody's Insecure" and the adjoining EP, Souls in Space, before shuffling their line-up again for 2020.
