Brooding, propulsive synth-pop led by a striking androgynous baritone. Icy new wave textures meet restless energy for late-night city drives.
Eliot Sumner’s music feels like a high-speed chase through a rain-slicked metropolis. It is sleek, cool, and undeniably modern, yet it carries the DNA of 1980s new wave and post-punk. The sound is defined by driving motorik rhythms, thick analog-style synths, and a sense of forward motion that never quite lets up. It is the sound of restlessness captured in a studio.
What truly sets Sumner apart is their vocal presence. Possessing a rich, androgynous baritone that often draws comparisons to their father, Sting, they use it with a much colder, more detached precision. The production is often dense and layered, creating a wall of sound that feels both claustrophobic and expansive, like being trapped in a beautiful, high-tech machine.
Start with the album Information. It represents the perfect bridge between their earlier indie-pop experiments and their more mature, electronic-leaning work. The title track and 'Dead Arms & Dead Legs' showcase the signature blend of driving basslines and haunting, existential lyricism that defines their best work.
