Lush analog synths and tribal rhythms that feel like a sunrise in the high desert. Intelligent ambient techno with a deep, narrative soul.
Electric Skychurch sounds like the precise moment a 90s warehouse rave transitions into a spiritual awakening. It is built on a foundation of warm, hardware-driven synthesis that feels organic rather than clinical. The music breathes with a pulse that sits somewhere between the steady thrum of a machine and the rhythmic breathing of a meditator, often incorporating subtle tribal percussion and ethereal vocal washes that suggest a vast, open landscape.
What sets them apart is the 'narrative' quality of the compositions. These aren't just loops; they are sonic journeys that evolve with a cinematic patience. James Lumb’s use of analog gear provides a thick, saturated texture that modern digital productions often struggle to replicate. It captures the 'electronica' aesthetic in its truest form: a sophisticated blend of electronic precision and exotic, worldly atmosphere.
Start with the album 'Knowoneness' to experience their definitive mid-90s sound. It perfectly encapsulates the transition from ambient contemplation to rhythmic trance, making it an essential listen for anyone interested in the roots of the West Coast electronic scene.
Electric Skychurch is an electronic or acid trance band based in Los Angeles, California. It was formed in 1991 by composer and producer James Lumb, who initially involved vocalist Roxanne Morganstern and percussionist Alex Spurkel in the project. Over time, Electric Skychurch has also included such musicians as Leigh Gorman of Bow Wow Wow. The band has worked with record labels such as Los Angeles–based electronic music label Moonshine Music. The single "Together" from the EP of the same name was their best-charting hit, reaching No. 1 on the College Music Journal RPM dance chart. The band is one of the featured artists in the documentary film Better Living Through Circuitry. Member David de Laski went on to form the music project Lord Runningclam.
