Eighteen Visions (18V) are seminal figures in the development of the 21st-century metalcore scene, originating from Orange County, California. Formed in 1995, the band initially operated within the 'holy terror' and sludge-influenced hardcore space, characterized by the dissonant, breakdown-heavy sound found on 'Until the Ink Runs Out' (2000).
As they evolved, they became pioneers of the 'clean-and-scream' vocal dynamic, a stylistic choice that would eventually become a genre standard. Their mid-career shift toward a more melodic, alternative metal sound on 'Vanity' and 'Obsession' alienated some purists but successfully bridged the gap between underground hardcore and mainstream rock. Culturally, they are credited with introducing the 'fashioncore' aesthetic, challenging the utilitarian dress code of the 90s hardcore scene with styled hair and high-end fashion. After a decade-long hiatus starting in 2007, they returned in 2017 with a sound that recaptured their early aggression while maintaining modern production standards. They remain a critical link between the raw metallic hardcore of the 90s and the polished, anthemic metalcore of the 2010s.
