Eerie, minimalist Brooklyn boom bap defined by haunting loops and skeletal drums. The sound of a city street at 3am when the air feels heavy.
This is the sonic equivalent of a noir film set in 1990s Brooklyn. Spencer Bellamy, the architect behind the project, crafts beats that feel less like songs and more like physical spaces: cold, dimly lit, and slightly dangerous. The production is famously sparse, often revolving around a single, hypnotic loop that feels like it’s stalking the listener. It is the definitive sound of the underground, where the lack of polish is exactly the point.
What makes this project distinctive is the surgical precision of the sampling. While many of his contemporaries were layering sounds for a wall-of-sound effect, Bellamy stripped everything away. The result is a high-tension atmosphere where every snare hit and every vocal inflection carries immense weight. It’s music that demands a specific kind of focus, rewarding those who appreciate the art of the loop and the grit of analog tape.
Start with the 12-inch single 'Tried by 12.' It is a foundational text of independent hip-hop, featuring a flute-like loop that has become one of the most recognizable and remixed motifs in the genre's history. From there, explore the 'First Born' EP to hear how Bellamy’s skeletal aesthetic evolved while maintaining its signature Brooklyn gloom.

The cypher consisted of Eminem, Shady Records artists Slaughterhouse (a hip hop collective of rappers Royce da 5'9", Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I) and Yelawolf all freestyling over the beat. This cypher was critically acclaimed and became one of the most discussed events to take place at the awards.
