Deadpan spoken-word narratives layered over sharp, melodic post-punk. It is the sound of modern life's strange, quiet details set to a restless, driving rhythm.
Dry Cleaning sounds like a very intelligent person reading their diary, a grocery list, and a series of overheard bus conversations over a band that can't stop playing tight, jagged grooves. The music is built on a foundation of interlocking bass and drums that feel both hypnotic and slightly anxious, while the guitar work dances between shimmering melodies and sudden, abrasive outbursts. It is music that demands you lean in to hear the words, only to realize the words are as surreal and fragmented as a dream. What truly sets them apart is the total absence of traditional singing. Florence Shaw's delivery is purely conversational, yet it possesses a rhythmic gravity that anchors the band's more experimental tendencies. There is a profound sense of 'Britishness' in the mundane details they highlight, turning the boring aspects of 21st-century life into something haunting, funny, and deeply relatable. The contrast between the cool, detached vocals and the warm, often aggressive instrumentation creates a unique tension. Start with 'New Long Leg' to hear them at their most focused and accessible. It captures the perfect balance of their early EP energy with a more expansive, professional production that highlights the intricate interplay between the four members. It's the ideal entry point for anyone curious about how spoken word can feel more punk than screaming.
Dry Cleaning are an English post-punk band formed in South London in 2017. The group consists of vocalist Florence Shaw, guitarist Tom Dowse, bassist Lewis Maynard, and drummer Nick Buxton. Noted for their distinctive blend of motorik riffs, angular guitar work, and Shaw’s spoken-word vocal delivery, Dry Cleaning quickly gained attention for their unconventional lyrics, dry wit, and minimalist approach. After initially coming together as longtime friends experimenting with instrumentals, the band’s sound crystallized when Shaw, a university lecturer and visual artist, joined as vocalist—despite having no prior experience in bands. Their debut single, “Magic of Meghan,” emerged in 2019, followed by two acclaimed EPs: Sweet Princess and Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks. Dry Cleaning released their debut album, New Long Leg, in 2021 to widespread critical acclaim. Their follow-up, Stumpwork (2022), further established their reputation, characterized by observational, collage-like lyrics and inventive post-punk instrumentation. Stumpwork won the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package in 2023, celebrating its striking design and packaging art—an important milestone in the band’s career. Renowned for their democratic writing and introspective approach, Dry Cleaning continue to evolve, with their third studio album currently in production with producer Cate Le Bon in France as of 2025.
