Drudkh

Dense, autumnal black metal that feels like a long walk through a fog-drenched forest. Hypnotic riffs and Ukrainian poetry for deep, solitary contemplation.

Intro

Drudkh sounds like the physical embodiment of a changing season. Their music is built on a foundation of thick, cascading tremolo-picked guitars that create a wall of sound, yet within that wall is a deep, resonant warmth rarely found in black metal. It is music that feels organic and rooted in the earth, often beginning with the sounds of chirping birds, falling rain, or rustling leaves before erupting into a hypnotic, mid-tempo storm of percussion and raspy, distant vocals.

What sets them apart is their profound sense of heritage and place. Rather than the typical occult or nihilistic themes of their peers, Drudkh draws from Ukrainian literature and landscape. Their compositions are long and patient, favoring a repetitive, trance-like structure that allows the listener to get lost in the atmosphere. The transition between aggressive distorted passages and clean, neofolk-inspired acoustic interludes feels like moving between the shadow and light of a dense canopy.

Start with 'Autumn Aurora' to experience their most iconic atmosphere. It is the definitive 'forest' album, balancing raw energy with a shimmering, golden-hued production that perfectly captures the transition into winter. For those who want more complexity and historical weight, 'Blood in Our Wells' offers a more epic, progressive take on their signature sound.

Drudkh is a Ukrainian black metal band. It currently consists of Roman Saenko (of Hate Forest and formerly of Dark Ages), Thurios (former member of Astrofaes and Hate Forest), Krechet, and Vlad. All four also were members of Blood of Kingu until it was disbanded. Their lyrics and artistic themes embrace Slavic mythology and Ukrainian nationalism. Many of the band's lyrics are derived from the works of nineteenth and twentieth-century Ukrainian poets (Oleksandr Oles, Oleh Olzhych, Maik Yohansen, etc.) and especially Taras Shevchenko. Drudkh have been particularly secretive throughout the course of their career, even for a black metal band, giving no interviews and not releasing the lyrics to several of their albums. From their conception until 2009, Drudkh did not have any official website, but in May 2009, Season of Mist launched an official Myspace, operated by the label rather than the band. The word "drudkh" is derived from the Sanskrit word for "forest" or "tree".
