Sharp, stylish indie rock that pairs New York grit with British melodic sensibilities. Short, punchy songs for city nights and romantic restlessness.
Drowners sound like the exact moment a night out transitions from anticipation to action. Their music is built on a foundation of interlocking, jangling electric guitars and a driving rhythm section that feels borrowed from the late-70s New York underground, yet it is polished with a 21st-century sheen. It is fast, melodic, and inherently stylish.
What sets them apart is the specific tension between Matthew Hitt’s Welsh-inflected croon and the band’s aggressive, short-form songwriting. While their peers often lean into messy garage rock, Drowners maintain a crisp, almost brittle precision. Their songs rarely overstay their welcome, often clocking in under three minutes, packed with literary-leaning lyrics about fleeting encounters and urban isolation.
Start with their self-titled debut for a masterclass in modern indie-pop economy. It captures a specific brand of romantic urgency that feels equally at home in a smoky London pub or a Lower East Side basement. It is music for people who appreciate a sharp hook and a sharper suit.
Drowners were an American-Welsh indie rock band formed in New York City in 2011 by Matthew Hitt (lead vocals, guitar), Jack Ridley III (lead guitar), Erik Lee Snyder (bass) and Daniel Jacobs (drums). Their first release was the EP Between Us Girls which appeared in early 2013. In January 2014 their debut album Drowners was released worldwide preceded by the single "Luv, Hold Me Down". In 2016, the band released their second album On Desire. The band has toured both North America and Europe.
