Intro

Drew McDowall creates music that feels like it was excavated rather than composed. It is a world of deep, resonant drones and flickering modular synth patches that suggest vast, lightless spaces. The sound is heavy and physical, yet it possesses a ghostly, translucent quality that keeps it from feeling oppressive. It is the sonic equivalent of a slow-motion collapse, where every fragment of sound is examined with microscopic intensity.

What sets McDowall apart is his mastery of the modular synthesizer as a tool for emotional and spiritual inquiry. Unlike the cold precision of many electronic artists, his work breathes with a strange, organic life. There is a ritualistic pacing to his albums, a sense that you are participating in a private ceremony. The textures are often murky and layered, rewarding the listener who is willing to sink into the depths of the mix to find the hidden melodies buried under the static.

Start with 'Agalma' to hear his most refined and collaborative vision, where choral and orchestral elements are processed into haunting new shapes. If you want something more claustrophobic and raw, 'Collapse' offers a masterclass in post-industrial sound design. This is music for the quiet hours when the world feels thin and the boundaries between the physical and the metaphysical begin to blur.

Drew McDowall is a Scottish composer and musician. He was a member of Coil in the 1990s contributing heavily to some of their most respected and influential works. As well as his solo work he has collaborated with Kali Malone, Caterina Barbieri, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Hiro Kone, Varg, Puce Mary, Shapednoise Rabit. James K and LEYA
