Dr. Feelgood

Sharp, jerky rhythm and blues with a menacing edge. It is the sound of a 1970s pub fight captured on tape: fast, raw, and unmistakably British.

Intro

This is music that feels like a firm, calloused handshake. It is stripped-back rock and roll that refuses to indulge in the excesses of its era, opting instead for a lean, percussive attack. The sound is defined by a frantic energy that feels both disciplined and dangerous, like a coiled spring ready to snap in a crowded room.

What truly sets them apart is the interplay between the 'choppy' guitar style and the gravel-throated vocals. While their contemporaries were exploring prog-rock or glam, this band looked backward to Chicago blues and forward to the aggression of punk. The result is an angular, staccato version of R&B that feels more like a rhythmic assault than a standard blues jam.

Start with the live album 'Stupidity' to hear them at their most combustible. It captures the frantic, no-nonsense spirit of their stage show, where the songs are short, the tempo is high, and the attitude is pure, unadulterated grit.

Dr. Feelgood are an English pub rock band formed in 1971. Hailing from Canvey Island, Essex, they are best known for early singles such as "She Does It Right", "Roxette", "Back in the Night" and "Milk and Alcohol". Their original and distinctively British R&B and rock and roll sound was centred on Wilko Johnson's choppy guitar style. Along with Johnson, the initial band line-up included singer Lee Brilleaux and the rhythm section of John B. Sparks, known as "Sparko", on bass guitar and John Martin, known as "The Big Figure", on drums. Although their most commercially productive years were the mid to late-1970s, and in spite of Brilleaux's death in 1994, a version of the band (featuring none of the original members) continue to tour and record.
