Diocletian

Militant, high-velocity metal that feels like a physical weight. Crushing rhythms and suffocating atmospheres for when you need total sonic obliteration.

Intro

Diocletian sounds like the grinding of heavy machinery in a theater of war. It is a relentless, suffocating wall of sound that bridges the gap between the chaotic energy of black metal and the muscular, rhythmic density of death metal. The guitars are thick and abrasive, often dissolving into sheets of noise, while the drumming is characterized by a militant, almost mechanical precision that never lets up. It is music designed to overwhelm the senses.

What truly sets them apart is their sense of discipline. While many bands in the 'war metal' subgenre lean into pure chaos, Diocletian maintains a terrifying level of control. Their tracks often feature sudden shifts into crushing, mid-tempo grooves that feel like a tank changing gears. The vocals are buried just enough in the mix to sound like a distant commander shouting over the din of artillery, adding to the immersive, high-stakes atmosphere of their records.

Start with 'Gesundrian' to hear them at their most polished and powerful. It is the definitive document of their sound, balancing sheer speed with a dark, epic sensibility. If you want something even more raw and punishing, 'Doom Cult' offers a more primitive, high-velocity experience that captures the band's early, uncompromising vision.

Diocletian is a New Zealand war metal band from Auckland. Formed in 2004, the band split in 2015. Its lineup then featured Brendan Southwell (also known as Atrociter and B.S.) (guitar, vocals), L. Muir (guitar, vocals, bass), C. Sinclair (drums) and J. Baldwin (guitars). The band's 2015 album, Gesundrian, was featured as number 15 on Pitchfork's list of "The Best Metal Albums of 2014". Brendan Southwell reactivated the band in 2016 with a whole new line-up. In 2018, Diocletian members are B.S. at lead guitar, E. M. at drums, and R.W. (Rigel Walshe from Dawn of Azazel) at bass. Impurath, from the American act Black Witchery takes lead vocal duty when available as C.T. The band played at Prague Death Mass in 2023.
