DIIV, led by Zachary Cole Smith, emerged from the 2010s Brooklyn indie scene as a defining voice of modern dream pop and shoegaze. Originally a solo project, the band's identity is built on 'interlocking' guitar parts influenced by Krautrock and West African highlife, filtered through a post-punk lens.
Their debut, Oshin (2012), was a critical darling that helped define the Captured Tracks aesthetic. The band's history is deeply intertwined with Smith's public struggles with heroin addiction, which heavily informed the sprawling double album Is the Is Are (2016) and the much heavier, sludge-influenced Deceiver (2019). Their evolution tracks a move from jangly, surf-inspired indie to a more mature, somber, and sonically dense shoegaze. Critically, they are praised for their technical precision and ability to translate personal trauma into expansive, atmospheric soundscapes. They remain a central pillar of the contemporary guitar-rock revival, influencing a wave of 'new-gaze' artists.
