Devil Doll

Devil Doll is the brainchild of the enigmatic Mr. Doctor (Mario Panciera), an Italian-Slovenian musician who maintained a strictly anonymous persona for decades.

Formed in 1987, the project is a singular entity in the progressive and avant-garde rock landscape, known for its extreme commitment to theatricality and long-form composition. Their sound is a complex tapestry of 1970s progressive rock, gothic horror aesthetics, classical music structures, and Slavic folk influences. A key hallmark is the use of the 'Hurry' orchestra and various choirs to create a 'Wall of Sound' that feels both ancient and experimental. The band's discography is notable for its rarity and cult status, with early releases featuring extremely limited pressings. Critically, Devil Doll is viewed as a bridge between the dark symphonic prog of bands like Jacula and the modern avant-metal of Kayo Dot or Angizia. The project effectively ceased after a studio fire and the subsequent release of 'Dies Irae', leaving behind a legacy of uncompromising, cinematic art rock that remains unmatched in its specific brand of macabre grandiosity.
