Intro

Detroit Grand Pubahs occupy a singular space in the electronic landscape, where the mechanical precision of Detroit techno collide with the irreverent, high-energy spirit of Miami bass and P-Funk. Their sound is defined by thick, analog synth lines and the unmistakable snap of classic drum machines, all serving as a foundation for surreal, often hilarious vocal performances. It is music that takes the craft of production seriously while refusing to take the culture of the club seriously.

What truly distinguishes them is their commitment to the 'weird.' While their peers in the Detroit scene often leaned into cold futurism or soulful depth, the Pubahs embraced a theatrical, almost cartoonish persona. From the deadpan delivery of bizarre lyrics to the use of found sounds and distorted vocal filters, they create a world that is both alien and deeply funky. It is the sound of a late-night warehouse party where the costumes are as important as the kick drum.

New listeners should start with the iconic single 'Sandwiches' to understand their blend of club-ready grooves and absurdist wit. From there, dive into the album 'Galactic Ass Creatures From Uranus' for a full-length exploration of their space-funk-techno hybrid. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who wants their electronic music to have a pulse, a punchline, and a massive bassline.

The Detroit Grand Pubahs are an American musical group from Detroit, Michigan, comprising Paris the Black Fu (real name Mack Goudy Jr.) and The Mysterious Mr O. (real name Oliver Way). One of the founding members, Dr. Toefinger (real name Andy Toth), left in 2004. They are best known for their 2000 single "Sandwiches", which reached #29 on the Dance Club Songs chart. The group was nominated for "Outstanding Funk Artist / Group" at the Detroit Music Awards in 2002. Rolling Stone called them "a group to watch..... this dynamic duo never ceases to amaze with creative use of found sound, foreboding vocals, and bizarre costumes". The group runs its own record label, Detelefunk, on which they release the group's own music and that of other artists.
