Depth Affect

Depth Affect was a pivotal French electronic collective active between 2004 and 2012, primarily consisting of David Bideau and Rémy Charrier. Emerging from Nantes, they occupied a unique intersection between the 'laptop folk' of labels like Morr Music and the aggressive glitch-hop of the Anticon collective.

Their sound identity is defined by the meticulous manipulation of breakbeats, heavily influenced by the cut-up techniques of Prefuse 73 and the textural depth of Christian Fennesz. Their career arc saw an evolution from the experimental, sample-heavy 'Arche-Lymb' (2006) toward the more structured, synth-driven 'Hero Crisis' (2008), which integrated pop sensibilities without sacrificing their signature rhythmic complexity. Critically, they were lauded for bridging the gap between cerebral IDM and the physical groove of hip-hop. They remain a cult favorite for fans of the 'French Touch' who desired something more fractured and melancholic than the standard filter-house of the era.
