Delays emerged from Southampton in the early 2000s, quickly distinguishing themselves from the gritty post-punk revival of the era through a commitment to unabashed melody and high-production values. Led by the late Greg Gilbert, whose distinctive falsetto drew frequent comparisons to Elizabeth Fraser and Billy Mackenzie, the band fused the melodic sensibilities of The La's and The Stone Roses with a more expansive, atmospheric production style.
Their debut album, Faded Seaside Glamour (2004), remains a high-water mark for mid-2000s indie, blending jangle-pop with a sense of coastal melancholy. As they evolved, albums like You See Colours introduced more prominent synthesizers and uptempo, groove-oriented structures, reflecting a 'hedonistic' influence. Critically, they were often hailed as the rightful heirs to the Manchester guitar-pop lineage, though they maintained a softer, more ethereal edge. The band's trajectory was tragically altered by Greg Gilbert's cancer diagnosis and subsequent passing in 2021, cementing their legacy as one of the most melodic and emotionally resonant acts of the UK indie scene.
