Deep Space Network

Deep Space Network is a pivotal project in the German electronic underground, formed in 1992 by David Moufang (Move D) and Jonas Grossmann. Based in Heidelberg, they became central figures in the development of ambient techno, particularly through their association with the Source Records label.

Their sound identity is characterized by a sophisticated use of analog synthesizers, dub-inflected basslines, and a spacious, 'liquid' approach to rhythm that avoids the harshness of industrial or hardcore techno. Their career arc peaked in the mid-1990s, a period defined by a fertile cross-pollination between the UK and German electronic scenes, most notably captured in their collaboration with Higher Intelligence Agency. Critically, they are regarded as masters of 'intelligent' dance music that prioritizes texture and atmosphere over peak-time energy. Their influence can be heard in the subsequent waves of dub techno and minimal house. For collectors, their early vinyl releases on Source are considered essential artifacts of the era's hardware-driven experimentation.
