Shimmering Australian psych-pop that balances retro analog warmth with a cool, late-night edge. Perfect for urban wandering and neon-lit moods.
Deep Sea Arcade crafts a sound that feels like a vintage film reel projected onto a modern city skyscraper. It is music that lives in the reverb, where 60s pop sensibilities are filtered through a hazy, 21st-century lens. The guitars don't just play chords; they shimmer and swirl, creating a thick atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and slightly dangerous. It is the sound of a band that knows how to write a hook but prefers to wrap it in a layer of beautiful, gauzy mystery.
What truly sets them apart is the contrast between their pop structures and their 'sinister' production choices. While the melodies are often bright and infectious, the underlying textures - born from early experiments with 4-track recorders and analog synths - provide a haunting depth. Nic McKenzie’s vocals are delivered with a detached, cool charisma that perfectly complements the intricate, soaring guitar work and driving, hypnotic rhythms.
Start with their debut album 'Outlands' for a masterclass in surf-tinged psych-rock, then move to 'Blacklight' to hear them evolve into a sleeker, more electronic-influenced beast. It is essential listening for anyone who wants their indie rock with a heavy dose of atmosphere and a touch of late-night melancholy.
Deep Sea Arcade is an Australian psychedelic band, formed in Sydney, New South Wales in 2008. The group began as a home recording project of founding members Nic McKenzie (lead singer, songwriter, lyricist) and Nick Weaver (co-composer, bassist, and guitarist) during their mid-teens, using four-track tape recorders, broadcast microphones, analog synths and unconventional computer programs. Their debut album, Outlands, released worldwide in 2012 through Ivy League Records. The band has played several sold-out tours across venues in Australia, the United Kingdom, and across Europe. On 26 October 2018, their second album, Blacklight, was released. The album was co-produced and mixed by Grammy award-winning producer Eric J (Flume, The Chemical Brothers), and featured Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, St. Vincent) on drums. Weaver left the band in 2018 and died from cancer in 2021 at the age of 37. In 2022, an album consisting of Weaver's solo compositions was posthumously published, entitled Won’t Let Go. In 2024, McKenzie announced a vinyl reissue of Outlands through Impressed Recordings, and revealed that a third studio album, featuring and co-produced by Jay Watson (Tame Impala, Pond), is set for release in 2026 through Origin Recordings and Warner ADA.
