Decree

Crushing rhythmic noise and mechanical aggression. A dense wall of industrial sound that feels like a factory coming to life in the dark.

Intro

Decree sounds like the mechanical heart of a city under siege. It is music built from the friction of metal on metal, featuring relentless rhythmic pounding and layers of abrasive noise that somehow coalesce into a structured, albeit terrifying, whole. The soundscapes are thick and suffocating, yet they possess a strange, dark majesty that rewards deep listening.

What sets Decree apart is the pedigree of Chris Peterson, whose work in Front Line Assembly and Will brings a level of sophisticated sound design rarely seen in pure noise projects. While many industrial acts rely on simple shock, Decree uses complex layering and unexpected rhythmic shifts, such as drum and bass breakbeats, to create a sense of constant, evolving dread. It is the sound of high-tech machinery malfunctioning in a very deliberate way.

Start with 'Fateless' for a modern masterclass in rhythmic industrial aggression. If you prefer something more experimental and atmospheric, 'Wake of Devastation' offers a bleaker, more drone-focused descent into the band's origins. It is essential listening for anyone who finds beauty in the breakdown of order.

Decree is a Canadian industrial band from Vancouver that was founded by Chris Peterson and John McRae in 1991. However, writing and gathering ideas started around 1989. Both musicians have also been working together at the beginning of the 1990s in the electronic music band Will. Decree released their debut album, Wake of Devastation, in 1996. They subsequently released Moment of Silence in 2004 and Fateless in 2011. In 2018, Artoffact Records released a vinyl collection of the band's albums on vinyl.
