Intro

David Lang's music feels like a series of meticulously placed stones in a quiet garden. It is a sound defined by what is missing as much as what is present, utilizing silence and repetition to create a sense of suspended time. Whether he is writing for a solo cello or a full choir, there is a characteristic 'dryness' to his work, an avoidance of romantic sentimentality that somehow makes the eventual emotional payoff feel even more earned and devastating.

What sets Lang apart is his ability to take the rigid, mathematical DNA of early minimalism and inject it with a raw, human vulnerability. He often uses 'hocketing' - a technique where a melody is split between different voices or instruments - to create a flickering, fragile texture. His Pulitzer-winning 'The Little Match Girl Passion' is the perfect example of this, turning a simple fairy tale into a monumental, liturgical experience through skeletal vocal arrangements.

For those new to his world, 'The Little Match Girl Passion' is the essential starting point for its sheer emotional weight. If you prefer instrumental work, 'Child' or his contributions to the 'Youth' soundtrack offer a more melodic but equally disciplined entry into his unique sonic architecture.

David Lang (born January 8, 1957) is an American composer living in New York City. Co-founder of the musical collective Bang on a Can, he was awarded the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Music for The Little Match Girl Passion, which went on to win a 2010 Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance by Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices. Lang was nominated for an Academy Award for "Simple Song #3" from the film Youth.
