Daughters represents one of the most drastic and successful aesthetic evolutions in modern heavy music. Emerging from the Providence, Rhode Island scene in the early 2000s, they initially defined the 'mathgrind' sound with 'Canada Songs', characterized by hyper-speed, dissonant bursts of technical aggression lasting less than a minute.
As they progressed, specifically on 'Hell Songs' and their self-titled 2010 release, they slowed the tempo and introduced a more art-damaged, noise rock sensibility influenced by the No Wave movement and the Jesus Lizard. Their final era, marked by the 2018 album 'You Won't Get What You Want', solidified them as titans of industrial-tinged experimental rock, earning universal acclaim for its oppressive atmosphere and sophisticated use of repetition. The band's legacy is currently complicated by serious personal allegations against vocalist Alexis Marshall, which led to an indefinite hiatus in 2021. Despite this, their influence on the intersection of hardcore, noise, and avant-garde rock remains foundational, particularly in their use of non-traditional guitar techniques to create texture over melody.
