Darkwood

Darkwood, led by Henryk Vogel since 1997, is a cornerstone of the German neofolk scene. Based in Dresden, the project emerged during the second wave of the genre, moving away from the more provocative industrial roots of pioneers like Death in June toward a more melodic, 'chamber folk' aesthetic.

The project's sound identity is built upon a foundation of acoustic guitar, mournful cello, and Vogel's distinctive baritone vocals, which often explore themes of German history, landscape, and existential longing. Over their career, they have evolved from the more minimalist, martial-influenced sounds of 'In the Fields' to the lush, instrumentally diverse arrangements found on later works like 'Ins dunkle Land'. Critically, they are respected for their high production values and consistent avoidance of the more controversial political tropes that plague the neofolk genre, focusing instead on a poetic, almost pastoral melancholy. They occupy a central node in a web of German and Nordic artists including Forseti and Sonne Hagal, representing a specific 'European' dark folk sound that prioritizes atmosphere and traditional instrumentation over electronic experimentation.
