Darkness

Darkness is a foundational pillar of the Colombian thrash metal scene, formed in Bogotá in 1986. While they share a name with several European acts, the Colombian Darkness is distinguished by their synthesis of classic 80s speed metal and a fierce, socially-conscious lyrical perspective delivered in Spanish.

Their 1989 release, 'Espias Malignos', is widely considered a cult classic of the Latin American underground, bridging the gap between the 'Teutonic' thrash style of bands like Destruction and the more chaotic, primitive energy found in early Brazilian extreme metal. Throughout their career, they have maintained a position as anti-establishment figures, using the aggressive framework of thrash to comment on the internal conflicts and social realities of Colombia. Their sound is defined by a 'wall of noise' guitar approach, rapid-fire snare work, and vocals that lean more toward a hardcore punk shout than a traditional metal growl. Despite periods of inactivity, they remain a vital reference point for the 'South American metal' identity, representing a time when the genre was a genuine outlet for political and social frustration.
