Intro

Danielle Nicole delivers a masterclass in modern blues that feels both ancient and immediate. Her music is anchored by her own formidable bass playing, which provides a thick, melodic foundation rarely seen in front-woman-led acts. The sound is rooted in the Kansas City blues tradition but infused with the grit of 70s rock and the sophisticated phrasing of classic soul. It is music that feels lived-in, smelling of tube amps and old wood.

What truly sets her apart is the sheer physical power of her voice. She possesses a range that can move from a vulnerable, smoky whisper to a floor-shaking belt without ever losing its tonal richness. Unlike many of her contemporaries who lean into polished pop-blues, Nicole maintains a raw, slightly dangerous edge in her delivery. Her rhythm section is often heavy and syncopated, drawing on funk and second-line influences that keep the energy high even on slower tracks.

New listeners should start with the 2018 album Cry No More. It represents the peak of her solo craft, showcasing her ability to blend traditional blues structures with contemporary songwriting. It is the perfect introduction to her dual threat as a world-class vocalist and a virtuoso bassist, proving that the blues is still a vital, evolving force in the 21st century.
