Daniel Ibbotson

Daniel Ibbotson is a Scottish electronic producer who emerged from the fertile Glasgow creative scene of the mid-1990s. While studying photography at the Glasgow School of Art, Ibbotson began experimenting with home recording, blending the 'bleep' techno influences of early Warp Records with the sophisticated textures of jazz and indie-rock.

His discovery by the influential Clear Records label positioned him alongside avant-garde electronic acts like Global Communication and The Black Dog, though Ibbotson’s work maintained a distinctively 'lo-fi' and intimate character compared to his peers. His sound identity is defined by intricate, shuffling drum machine patterns, warm analog synth pads, and a penchant for minor-key melodies that evoke urban isolation. Throughout the late 90s and early 2000s, his releases on Clear and its subsidiary Reel Discs helped define the 'downtempo' and 'nu-jazz' movements, emphasizing a bridge between technical IDM and accessible, atmospheric lounge music.
