Dan Bern

Wry, literary folk that balances biting satire with surreal storytelling. It is the sound of a sharp mind finding the humor in a chaotic world.

Intro

Dan Bern sounds like the smartest, funniest person at the protest who brought an acoustic guitar and a notebook full of shaggy-dog stories. His music is built on the skeletal framework of traditional folk, but it is populated by a cast of surreal characters, historical figures, and biting political observations. There is a restless, caffeinated energy to his delivery, often channeling the rapid-fire 'talking blues' style of his idols while injecting a distinctly modern, cynical edge.

What truly sets Bern apart is his reflexive literacy and his willingness to subvert the 'earnest folkie' trope. He is a master of the meta-commentary, frequently poking fun at his own influences and the absurdity of the music industry. His voice is nasal and expressive, capable of shifting from a conspiratorial whisper to a ferocious bark within a single verse, ensuring that the listener is always leaning in to catch the next punchline or poetic turn.

Newcomers should start with his 1997 self-titled debut or 'Fifty Eggs' to hear his songwriting at its most potent and polished. These albums showcase his ability to blend heart-on-sleeve vulnerability with the kind of sharp-tongued wit that makes him a spiritual successor to both Bob Dylan and Lenny Bruce. It is essential listening for anyone who likes their folk music with a heavy dose of irony and intelligence.

Dan Bern (also known as Bernstein; born July 27, 1965) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, novelist, and painter. His music has been compared to that of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Ochs and Elvis Costello. He is a prolific composer, having written over one thousand songs. He wrote the novel Quitting Science (2004) under the pen name Cunliffe Merriwether and wrote the preface under his own name. Bern describes his music as "[u]ndefinable by genre, crossing over and through folk, rock, singer-songwriter, and kids music" with sardonic, literary lyrics. He has toured with Ani DiFranco, The Who, and Roger Daltrey.
