Dark, subterranean electronic textures that trade euphoria for mystery. A masterclass in tension-heavy progressive trance for the deepest hours of the night.
This is the shadow side of the dance floor. While mainstream trance often reaches for the clouds with bright, soaring melodies, Dakota stays firmly in the basement. The sound is defined by thick, undulating basslines and a sense of constant, coiling tension that rarely offers a traditional release. It feels like navigating a sprawling, futuristic city at 3 AM, where the lights are dim and every corner holds a secret.
What makes this project distinctive is the rejection of 'hands in the air' tropes. Instead of massive builds and sugary drops, you get meticulous sound design, industrial-tinged percussion, and a murky, liquid atmosphere. It is progressive in the truest sense, focusing on the hypnotic evolution of a single rhythmic idea rather than quick gratification. It is the sound of a veteran producer stripping away the polish to find something raw and primal.
Start with the album 'Thoughts Become Things'. It perfectly captures the transition from rhythmic focus to atmospheric storytelling. It is the ideal entry point for anyone who wants their electronic music to feel a bit more dangerous, a bit more thoughtful, and significantly more immersive than the standard club fare.
Dakota was an American based melodic rock group, initially active during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Dakota first achieved moderate success with their 1979 self-titled album Dakota, but the band's popularity increased rapidly while performing as the opening act for Queen on their 1980–1981 The Game Tour. The band released their second and best-selling AOR album, titled Runaway, in 1984. The band experienced several line-up changes during the 1980s and eventually stopped performing in 1987. During the 1990s and 2000s original member Jerry Hludzik continued to record a number of records under the Dakota name, featuring guest musicians, friends and also his son Eli Hludzik. In 2014, original members Jerry Hludzik and Bill Kelly reunited and teamed up with Jon Lorance and Eli Hludzik to record a new Dakota album titled Long Road Home, which was released on October 30, 2015.
