Sophisticated urban soundscapes where modal jazz piano meets crisp breakbeats. Cinematic, intelligent electronic music for deep thought and late-night city wandering.
D*Note sounds like the intersection of a smoky 1960s jazz club and a 1990s London warehouse party. The music is anchored by elegant, classically-informed piano work that feels both ancient and modern, often floating over the top of dusty breakbeats or intricate drum and bass rhythms. It is music that feels deeply rooted in the city, capturing the specific loneliness and beauty of urban life after dark.
What makes them truly distinctive is the high-concept musicality brought by founder Matt Winn. Unlike many of their acid jazz contemporaries who relied on simple loops, D*Note incorporates complex polytonalities and minimalist structures inspired by composers like Steve Reich and Maurice Ravel. This intellectual rigor gives the tracks a structural depth that rewards close, repeated listening, elevating the 'chillout' aesthetic into something more akin to modern chamber music.
Start with the debut album 'Babel' to hear the foundational blend of jazz and hip-hop, then move to 'Criminal Justice' for a more cinematic and socially conscious experience. If you prefer a more ethereal, vocal-led sound, their later collaboration with Beth Hirsch offers a beautiful, stripped-back entry point into their sophisticated world.
D*Note is a British electronic dance music band, founded primarily in London in 1993 by musician Matt Winn (aka Matt Wienevski, born 20 September 1965). The band emerged with their debut album Babel, which reflected an acid jazz background. Alongside Wienevski, D*Note consists of musical friends, including keyboard player Matt Cooper who records with Outside and Incognito, guitarist Keith Osbourne and others. Vocalists have included Beth Hirsch, Pamela Anderson, Ceri Evans of Sunship, Dee Major and more. Other collaborators include scratching from Charlie Lexton as Cool Breeze, rappers Navigator and Krazy Cool D-Zine.
