Haunting, esoteric folk that feels like a whispered secret from a forgotten century. Apocalyptic nursery rhymes for the spiritually restless.
Listening to Current 93 is like stumbling upon a hidden chapel in the middle of a dense, ancient forest. The music is deeply rooted in a specific kind of English eccentricity, blending delicate acoustic melodies with the unsettling textures of industrial noise and tape loops. It feels both intensely intimate and vast, as if David Tibet is whispering cosmic truths directly into your ear while a storm gathers on the horizon.
What truly sets them apart is Tibet's singular vocal delivery: a high, nasal, and rhythmic chant that blurs the line between singing and sermonizing. The arrangements often feature a revolving door of avant-garde legends, resulting in a sound that can shift from a sparse, lonely guitar piece to a dense, terrifying wall of sound. It is music that demands your full attention, rewarding the listener with a sense of profound, albeit eerie, spiritual transcendence.
For those new to this world, Thunder Perfect Mind is the essential entry point. It perfectly balances their folk sensibilities with a creeping sense of dread and beauty. If you prefer something more abstract and haunting, All the Pretty Little Horses offers a dreamlike, nocturnal experience that showcases the band's ability to turn simple melodies into something truly otherworldly.
Current 93 are an English experimental music group, founded in 1982 by David Tibet. Much of Current 93's early work was similar to late 1970s and early 1980s industrial music: abrasive tape loops, droning synthesizer noises and Tibet's distorted, excoriating vocals. In the mid-'80s, Current 93's sound shifted to a style Tibet has called "apocalyptic folk", combining folk music with industrial elements and lyrics emphasizing Christianity (particularly mystical and eschatological elements), occultism, and various literary traditions. Tibet has been the only constant member of Current 93, with a wide variety of collaborators joining in over the years. They have released over twenty full-length albums, as well as many other recordings.
