Cubismo Grafico is the primary alias of Gakuji Matsuda, a central figure in the second wave of the Shibuya-kei movement. Emerging in the late 1990s, Matsuda's work is characterized by an 'archivist' approach to production, drawing heavily from 1960s lounge, sunshine pop, and European cinema soundtracks.

His sound identity is defined by dense, melodic sample collages that bridge the gap between electronic downtempo and organic chamber pop. Unlike some of his contemporaries who leaned into pure kitsch, Matsuda maintains a sophisticated harmonic palette and a penchant for indie-rock energy, often collaborating with artists across the Japanese indie scene. His career arc shows a transition from sample-heavy experimentalism in 'Tout!' to more structured, song-oriented arrangements in later works like 'Foga.' Critically, he is viewed as a bridge between the high-concept pop of Pizzicato Five and the more relaxed, 'cafe culture' aesthetics of the early 2000s.
