Criolo

Gritty São Paulo street poetry meeting the elegance of classic samba. Soulful, socially sharp music that feels like a long walk through a sprawling, restless city.

Intro

Criolo sounds like the intersection of a smoky jazz club and a vibrant street protest. His music is deeply rooted in the soil of São Paulo, carrying the weight of the city's struggles while floating on the beauty of its musical heritage. You will hear the sharp, rhythmic precision of boom-bap hip-hop suddenly give way to the lush, acoustic warmth of a samba-canção, tied together by a voice that can shift from a gritty rap flow to a vulnerable, melodic croon in a single breath.

What makes him truly distinctive is his refusal to stay in one lane. While his peers might stick to the beat, Criolo invites entire orchestras, brass sections, and traditional percussionists into the mix. He treats the history of Brazilian music not as a museum piece, but as a living, breathing tool for modern storytelling. His production is often cinematic, creating wide-screen atmospheres that feel both intimate and monumental.

Start with the album Nó Na Orelha. It is the definitive document of his sound, perfectly balancing his hip-hop roots with the expansive MPB influences that made him a global name. From there, dive into Espiral de Ilusão if you want to hear him fully embrace the classic samba tradition, or Convoque seu Buda for a more psychedelic, modern take on his signature social commentary.

Kleber Cavalcante Gomes (born September 5, 1975), known professionally as Criolo (formerly Criolo Doido), is a Brazilian rapper and songwriter who has been nominated for four Latin Grammy Awards. He began his career in 1989 and initially gained recognition in Brazil as the creator of Rinha dos MCs. However, he later achieved worldwide attention for his solo work, particularly the album Nó Na Orelha (2011). In 2019, he was nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards, for "Boca de Lobo" (Best Music Video, Short Version) and "Etérea" (Best Song in Portuguese). In 2022, he was nominated again for two Latin Grammy Awards, for "Sobre Viver" (Best Rock or Alternative Album) and "Me Corte Na Boca Do Céu - A Morte Não Pede Perdão" (Best Song in Portuguese).
