Cerebral art rock with a sharp satirical edge and tight funk grooves. Like Steely Dan with more grit and a restless, progressive heart.
Crack the Sky sounds like the smartest guys in the room who are also slightly annoyed to be there. Their music is a sophisticated blend of progressive rock complexity, power pop hooks, and a rhythmic tightness that occasionally veers into white-boy funk. It is music that demands your attention, not because it is loud, but because it is clever, featuring sudden time signature shifts and lush vocal harmonies that feel both classic and slightly subversive.
What makes them distinctive is the biting, satirical wit of John Palumbo. While their contemporaries in the prog scene were singing about wizards and cosmic journeys, Crack the Sky was writing about social decay, media obsession, and the absurdities of modern life. They possess a specific 'Mid-Atlantic' grit that separates them from the more ethereal British prog bands, grounding their technical prowess in something more cynical and relatable.
Start with their self-titled 1975 debut. It is a masterclass in 70s production that manages to be both accessible and wildly inventive. From there, move to Animal Notes to hear them push their progressive tendencies further into theatrical territory. It is the perfect discovery for anyone who loves the precision of Steely Dan but wants a bit more rock and roll danger.
Crack the Sky is an American progressive rock band formed in Weirton, West Virginia, in the early 1970s. In 1975, Rolling Stone declared their first album the "debut album of the year", and in 1978, Rolling Stone Record Guide compared them to Steely Dan. Their first three albums charted on the Billboard 200. In 2015, their debut album was ranked number 47 in the Rolling Stone list of "50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time ". The band continues to release albums and perform to a small but devoted fan base.
