COLOR

COLOR is a foundational pillar of the Japanese visual kei movement, specifically representing the 'Kansai' (Western Japan) school of thought. Formed in 1985 by Dynamite Tommy, the band merged the sonic aggression of UK-influenced punk and hardcore with a flamboyant, glam-inspired visual aesthetic.

Tommy’s founding of the Free-Will record label in 1986 was a watershed moment for Japanese independent music, providing a platform for the 'West' scene to rival the 'East' scene dominated by Yoshiki’s Extasy Records. This rivalry, often summarized by the phrase 'X of the East, Color of the West,' was central to the development of visual kei's early identity. Musically, COLOR moved from raw punk on 'Gekitotsu!!' toward a more structured, though still violent, rock sound on their major debut 'ASK THE ANGELS.' Despite commercial pressure to soften their image for the mainstream, the band maintained a reputation for volatility. Their influence is immense, not just musically, but structurally, as Free-Will went on to produce some of the biggest names in the genre. The band's legacy is defined by their DIY spirit, their role in institutionalizing the visual kei business model, and their uncompromising Kansai punk attitude.
